Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 25 I have just returned from the Australian National Field Days in Borenore with the SSAA NSW team and over the course of the three days we fielded at least 10-12 enquiries regarding the same subject that is raised to us by members on a near daily basis and that is, "what does the SSAA Member Liability Insurance cover a member for". This question was often followed up by, "so does it cover me for professional shooting?" To set the record straight, as part of your SSAA membership each member is provided with $20,000,000 Public Liability Cover. The liability covers the member for any property damage or personal injury that they may cause to a third party due to their negligence whilst they are engaged in any lawful recreational shooting activities anywhere in Australia. The Policy Definition for Lawful Recreational Shooting is bodily injury and/or property damage caused by the discharge of a firearm, crossbow or archery bow in a manner that is allowed or permitted by law and/or with lawful authority. The SSAA Member Liability Insurance DOES NOT cover a member for ANY PAID Professional Shooting. Insurers deem payment to include cash, cheque, free fuel/supplies, ammunition re-imbursement by the landholder or goods exchanged in lieu of payment as previously noted. What can SSAA Insurance Brokers do to assist Professional Shooters? We can provide cover for a Public Liability policy covering professional shooting with limits of liability of $10,000,000 or $ 20,000,000. If you are working on government owned/managed land you will generally require a $ 20,000,000 limit. It's important to check your contract with the landowner to ensure you have the required level of cover. We would need the member to complete a proposal form and the proposal form must be reviewed by the insurers prior to any premium being confirmed or any cover being arranged. So as a member, please be aware and do not rely on the SSAA Member Liability Insurance to cover you should you be doing Professional Shooting. The policy will not cover you and you will be exposing yourself personally in the event of a financial loss.
