Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 29 6. Which elements need to be abolished? Rather than bore you with words have a look at this table of amendments we moved to the Firearms Act 2017 which shows how other MP's voted too. We are the only party in NSW who is capable of doing this as we have been proudly representing law-abiding fi rearms owners since fi rst getting elected in 1995. 7. Which elements can be improved in terms of enforcement? The government could put greater emphasis on punishing gun crime more harshly; we need a Firearms Ombudsman appointed to properly adjudicate the appeals process where as we see on innumerable occasions, unfair and sometimes plain bad decisions are made by FAR. We need laws that are evidence based, not based on scare tactics of certain elements of the media and politicians. 8. Would you support the reintroduction of hunting seasons in NSW? We would support the introduction of hunting seasons in NSW especially as they relate to ducks, quail and certain native pigeons. 9. Given the strict enforcement of fi rearms laws in Australia, and the generous fi nancial support provided to athletes who compete in non-shooting sports, should there be special fi nancial assistance provided to sporting shooters? EG nobody needs a netball or cricket licence. Yes, we would agree that special assistance should be provided to ensure that the shooting sports are treated equally and fairly. SFF would be prepared to advocate for such a scheme. 10. How long have you been a shooter? I have been a shooter and hunter since the age of 14. 11. How did you get involved in shooting? I got involved through a school friend whose father had a property down the south coast south of Bega, we hunted rabbits and foxes, I fi rst joined the SSAA when I was 18. 12. Do you have a preferred fi rearm for target shooting? The main form of target shooting I do is clay target shooting, I have a Berretta Silver Pigeon that I really love, used mostly for simulated fi eld and game. 13. Do you hunt often? Not as often as I would like. 14. Do you fi nd other MPs and Senators are open to reasonable, evidence-based discussions around fi rearms laws? If so, who? Unfortunately, most are not. While some MPs and Senators hold a fi rearms licence most of them are disinterested and happy to use fi rearms laws as a political tool to grab votes. I suspect deep down inside they all know that victimising and over regulating law-abiding people doesn't reduce gun crime but that's just the culture of big party politics. Anything for a vote! The only representation that means something is more representation by SFF, because it's in our political DNA.
