SSAA NSW Visit Griffith Last week SSAA NSW staff Robert Broderick, Theo Hystek and myself loaded up the Mobile Air Rifle Range and set off down the Hume Highway for Griffith in the beautiful Riverina - home to the 2013 Riverina Field Days. Riverina Field Days is a large agricultural based show, but when the local SSAA NSW Griffith Branch asked to bring the full length (10m) Mobile Air Rifle Range down to the Show, the organisers were thrilled with the idea. After a long drive, we arrived on Thursday night to start setting up the Range along with our fantastic volunteers Warren Brown and Greg Allen. Fast forward to Friday morning and we were back at the site bright and early, ready for a busy day. Throughout the two days there was a constant stream of people waiting to try shooting at the Range. Being in the country, many already had some experience with firearms - even those we might least expect (as I soon found out!). As I tried to get more people to try it for themselves, I approached one lady of some years to assure her that there would be no big bang or kick like she may have seen in the movies. However she swiftly assured me: "Son, I've got much bigger guns than that at home!" Tucked at the back of the showgrounds we knew it would take some time for show-goers to make their way through the maze of massive tractors, harvesters, buggies, Akubra hats and even a few alpacas, but once they noticed the Range, they were very keen to have a go. 4 Lesson learned! There were, of course, a few sideways glances that we would dare to promote firearms, however in most cases that initial apprehension disappeared when they tried it for themselves and found out it was not only safe, but also a lot of fun.
