Crime Stoppers and Police across the country are giving
Australians a chance to surrender for destruction unwanted or
unregistered firearms, parts, and ammunition at no cost and
without penalty for illegal possession.
Our aim is for safer communities, and this starts with the safe
storage of firearms, and the handing in of illegal firearms and
ammunition. Taking illegal guns out of the community can never
be a bad thing.
The National Firearms Amnesty commenced on 1 July 2021 and
the message was simple, direct and important:
• No unregistered firearms
• That's our aim
• Hand it in
Assistant Commissioner Scott Cook, Police Prosecutions and
Licensing Enforcement Command (PPLEC) explains that the
amnesty has been made extremely accessible in NSW. He
says, "In NSW, we opened the pathways for people to hand in
unregistered firearms – beyond police - by including licensed
firearms dealers and club armourers. This makes it easy,
reassuring for people worried about going to a police station,
and convenient."
The amnesty coincides with the launch of Gun Safe – a new
online portal for managing firearms transactions in NSW.
NSW Police Force and Crime
Stoppers are calling for residents
to register or surrender illegal
firearms and ammunition without
being penalised for illegal
possession, as part of the first ever
permanent national amnesty.
