35 NOVEMBER 2021 Designed with community safety top of mind, this platform is the first of its kind replacing manual licence applications with real time information and verification. The portal will be linked to the acquisition of firearms in NSW and disposal of firearms locally and interstate. This risk-based system notifies the registry of unusual or unverified transactions which will reduce risk of harm in the community. Mr Cook states, "With Gun Safe's technology, we have made it easier for dealers and customers to bring firearms in for them to be registered or surrendered for destruction." "And the results are impressive. The month of July saw over 1500 firearms being handed to dealers and police stations, with over 1000 of these being entering through a dealership. So far we have seen an Armi-Jager, a AAA SAR rifle, a Norinco SKS and a sawn off rifle handed in. These heavy-duty guns, previously unknown to police, are on their way to the smelter." Scott Cook continued, "We are thrilled to be working with CrimeStoppers in running community-based and localised events, COVID dependent, over the next few months to reinforce the messaging so that this momentum continues. "Now every one of the nearly 1000 newly registered amnesty guns – and their owners - are on the NSW firearms register. This means they are subject to licensing and registration requirements and compliance checks." "I hope that we continue to see such a positive response from the public in coming forward to hand firearms in for registration or destruction, although I remind people to ensure they are complying with current health orders at all times." "With regard to the health situation in NSW and despite the rapidly changing environment, the Firearms Registry continues to operate in its full capacity providing its full suite of services. As well, various initiatives for licence holders have been implemented to support people during these difficult times and I urge licence holders to check the website for updates – www. police.nsw.gov.au/firearms".
