AHN Corner A few days in Bourke Recently I headed out to a property near Bourke for a few days of chasing pigs and goats with some mates and their sons and daughters. We left the coast at 4am Friday morning, and arrived at the block after 2pm. After a quick visit to the owners to say hello we set up camp in the old shearers quarters then went for a drive to see what was around. It didn't take us long to find some goats camped up next to a dam that wouldn't have had water in it for months – maybe the goats were waiting for the rain that was on the way. The one on the right was quickly dropped by one of the juniors with the mighty 22 magnum, and was his first goat so he was pumped! After that we checked a few other dams with water, looking for some pigs, but had no luck. A few drops of rain fell to cool us down, but the area really needs a good soaking and soon. The next day we again managed to shoot a few goats in the morning, while some of the other guys took the kids into town to look around and get some lunch. Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. The next morning I woke early, grabbed some food and water and my .223 and went for a walk to the same dam, but there was nothing. As I turned to leave I saw a large feral cat walking about 80m ahead. Unfortunately the shot missed. The rest of the morning was spent watching roos, emus and a goanna going in for a drink before we were able to dispatch a few more goats. Later that day a few big mobs of goats arrived for the water, and we were hopeful we may have seen some pigs – but unfortunately none ventured out, so no luck there. It was an enjoyable trip, but the area really is in desperate need of some decent rainfall. Randall (a.k.a Rusty351) 13
