Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 10 Tilterweira's New Caretaker I started to go to Tilterweira in 2006 for two main reasons; SSAA NSW had started an Easter Family Week at Tilterweira and it was discounted for the whole week for my two kids and me; the other was that Bree my daughter had turned 12 earlier on in the year and they were going to teach her (and us) to hunt, track and about shot placement, etc. Well, Bree and my son Peter both learnt H&C skills, Bree got her one horned trophy and we had one of the chewiest goat dinners that we have ever tried. That was the start of a 9 year journey to Tilterweira. The Easter Family Hunts returned for a couple of years after that, it was always discounted and promised a feed of goat (this time I cooked), the H&C lectures and a great time. Then they included a Father-Son Week in September which was discounted for H&C members. I rang to see if that would include a Father-Daughter duo as Peter was still too young to shoot; that was the start of a twice yearly trip to Tilterweira. That was 2007 - 2008. After our fourth year, we knew Tilterweira reasonably well, well enough that George knew we would end up in the right paddock and not do anything stupid. I had begun to do a one night feast for the whole camp using produce that had been harvested from the property and, for all the new kids, I would tan skins and post them out for free at the end of each Easter Family Week and Father-Son Week. 2010 to 2014 was probably the hardest for Tilterweira but during this time Bree, Peter and myself were still going twice a year at Easter and now winter for about 10 days each time. Instead of spending all our time hunting we would help out around the property, help show new hunters around, I would do skinning demonstrations plus show how to break down beasts. I still did the whole camp feasts, took new hunters out while Bree and Peter baby sat or vice-versa. I still tanned skins not only for the juniors but also for any new/beginner hunters and posted them off for free. Tilterweira holds many special memories for me. My kids have learnt to shoot, hunt, and catch yabbies, they have learnt the responsibility of using a firearm, to back themselves on the decisions they make and yes, to enjoy themselves. Me, I have got to spend 9 wonderful years watching my kids grow up in a fantastic place and now that I have been employed as the new Caretaker for Tilterweira I hope to get her back to her brilliant best. Tilterweira has its hunting side, picturesque side, delicacies and yes time to just have fun. This is what I want to show you, the real Tilterweira experience, but I need you to come out and see for yourselves all that Tilterweira has to offer.
