18 Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. Whether you just want to have a few shots for fun and relaxation, or want to get competitive, target shooting has something for everyone. SSAA NSW Branches and Affiliate Clubs operate at ranges right across the state, with many ranges used on a shared basis with other shooting organisations. Approved target shooting ranges may be used for serious competition or just general target practice, sighting in and load development for the reloaders amongst us. All ranges operate in accordance with the conditions of their range approval licence which sets out what can and cannot be conducted or used on individual ranges. These conditions may vary from range to range depending upon the safety template, or range danger area (RDA) used. The template type will determine such things as shooting positions and calibres permitted. The NSW Firearms Registry is responsible for approving target ranges in NSW, and range operation times are determined by the local Council. Your local SSAA NSW Branch or Affiliate Club can give advice on the variety of disciplines/events as well as any calibre restrictions on the local range. Nobody knows the local range better than the Branch or Affiliate Club using it, so it only makes sense to speak to the locals. Now for those seeking something different or have a particular interest in certain aspects of the sport there is much to choose from. Some examples are: • Single Action: dress like a cowboy from the old west and use firearms from that time period, • Combined Services: military rifle and pistol events using service firearms, • Shotgun: a variety of fast and furious clay target activities, • Muzzle Loading: dress in buckskins (or not) and travel back to simpler times, • Benchrest: chase the elusive one-hole group using finely tuned rifles and loads, • Pistol: a variety of matches and events using a pistol or revolver, • Lever Action: various events designed specifically for lever action rifles, and • Metallic Silhouette: knock down steel targets at ever increasing distances. There are more events and activities available than most people would imagine so why not find out what you have been missing out on all this time. Speak to the Discipline Chairmen to find out more about the different disciplines and the firearms they use, as well as where they are conducted. Who would have thought that using a target shooting range could be so much fun?
