Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 5 Shooting Community Helps Raise Over $40,000 for National Breast Cancer Foundation SSAA NSW Executive Director Diana Melham, with generous support from SSAA and the shooting community, raised $41,051 for breast cancer research as part of the recent 'Steps Towards a Cure: Great Wall Trek 2016''. Diana and her brother-in-law Simon (as Team Di & Si) completed a challenging 54km trek along China's Great Wall over 5 days in late May. The journey took them along unrestored parts of the Wall and included thousands upon thousands of stairs and seemingly endless steep inclines. "My Fitbit stats say we took a total of 84,926 steps which included 835 flights of stairs both up and then back down, but the views were absolutely amazing and definitely worth the hard work" said Diana. "The majority of funds I raised came from the shooting community and it just blows me away how generous and giving they are" said Diana. Thank you to our sponsors SSAA National, SSAA NSW, SSAA Sydney Branch and Revesby Workers Club who each donated $5,000; and SSAA Insurance Brokers, SSAA SHOT Expo, Tresami Computer Engineering, Master Plaster Linings, Atlas Cleaning Services, Ten Eyewitness News, ACI Pty Ltd and Globalex Legal who donated $1,000 each. SSAA NSW and St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre hosted a Try Shooting Charity Day which raised over $14,000. "So many people made the day possible and a special thank you to our 50 volunteers who worked hard to make sure the day was a success and everyone participating walked away with a great big smile on their face". Nioa, Winchester, Safari Firearms, Triforce, local businesses, staff and customers generously donated ammunition and prizes for the Day. Diana and Simon paid their travel and registration fees out of their own pockets which meant 100% of the $71,108 they raised as Team Di & Si went directly to the NBCF. The group of 44 trekkers raised a total of $295,088 which will be spent on research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer and help NBCF achieve their goal of having zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.
