14 Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. Ask Trevor SSAA Firearms Insurance Question: What insurance cover do I get as an individual SSAA Member? Answer: SSAA members are covered for any lawful recreational shooting activity, which includes shooting at a range and when out hunting. SSAA members have public liability cover of $20 million which includes property damage or personal injury caused to a third party due to their negligence. SSAA members also receive personal accident insurance which covers them for any personal injury whilst participating in recreational shooting activities which results in a loss of income. The benefit payable is up to $750 per week for 2 years, with the first 7 days excluded. Question: Does SSAA Insurance provide cover for visitors who are non-members at a SSAA NSW Branch or Affiliate Club? Answer: The liability ($20 million) of authorised visitors and non-members is covered as long as they're not covered by another association's insurance. Authorised visitors include both licensed shooters and people shooting under a P650 declaration under the direct supervision of a licensed shooter. Non-shooting visitors are also covered. Question: I've seen firearms insurance offered by other associations – is the SSAA Members Firearms Insurance any different? Answer: SSAA Members Firearms Insurance isn't compulsory and provides $25,000 worth of cover for $25. It also provides coverage Australia-wide for full accidental loss or damage and covers all perils, including cover for firearms registered in your name, and fixed accessories, whilst in use anywhere in Australia. There are other similar insurances, however they only seem to provide coverage whilst in transit, stored in a locked vehicle or building and if damaged or destroyed by fire or theft. SSAA Members Firearms Insurance also provides worldwide coverage for 28 days as opposed to others that only provide coverage for 21 days. The coverage provided by SSAA is for replacement cost, where other policies only provide coverage for market value and appear to be confined to repair or replacement of the damaged part. I would encourage you to seek clarification from other insurance providers on the benefits provided by their coverage. Question: I'm a SSAA member and I have the opportunity to shoot with a non-SSAA affiliated club at one of their club shoots. I'm not a member of that club so would only be a visitor. Will I be covered by my SSAA member insurance or would the club's insurance cover this? Answer: Your SSAA insurance would provide coverage in the event that the insurance of the non-SSAA affiliated club doesn't cover you. Question: As an Affiliate Club, what coverage do we get from SSAA Insurance? Answer: SSAA NSW Affiliate Clubs receive $20 million public liability insurance which covers the club for any property damage or personal injury to a third party that the club may have contributed to due to its negligence. Examples include if a third party trips in the car park due to loose pavers, a club BBQ explodes injuring people or the club serves up a "dodgy curry" causing illness to members and visitors. The Affiliate Club's Committee also receives Association Liability insurance. Designed for not-for-profit organisations, this insurance covers the office bearers and any employees against personal liability for breaches of their duties as well as the organisation's liability. The cover extends to professional indemnity cover for the provision of professional services, office bearer's liability cover and association reimbursement for claims against officers and employees of the association, employment practice liability such as wrongful dismissal or discrimination claims plus representation expenses at official investigations or inquiries. Volunteer Personal Accident insurance provides cover for club volunteers for accidents that occur when they're participating in volunteer activities for the club. The coverage provides for loss of income up to $250 per week for 26 weeks. Trevor Jenkin National Manager SSAA Insurance Brokers
