18 Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. A Future Olympic Shooter? Keegan McGrann Around two years ago, in order to spend some more time with his grandfather, Keegan McGrann applied for his minor's permit and began rim fi re shooting with his uncle, Lee and grandfather, Edward. Both Lee and Edward are record holders in their own right and Lee had previously represented Australia in benchrest shooting. Keegan has also been playing junior football with Colyton Colts. Earlier this year in May at Batemans Bay, Keegan, 15, attended with the Dundas family as both Lee and Edward had other commitments. And because Edward was away, Keegan couldn't take the rifl e that he normally uses for competition with him on the trip. But that didn't stop Keegan from defending his 2015 Junior State title. As he didn't have the rifl e he normally uses, Kath Dundas offered hers. However, it was a right-hand action with a left-hand feed port. With David Dundas acting as spotter and offering encouragement, Keegan shot Kath's rifl e at 200 yards. With 4 cards shot, it looked as if Keegan would be relegated to second spot behind Les Fraser but after the 5th card was shot, Keegan had pipped Les by a single point! While the scorers were spending some time examining Keegan's card, his grandfather Edward rang from the UK (where it was 4.30am) to enquire how the shoot had gone. Keegan modestly told him that he had won the day outright and may have set a National record. Edward was overcome with emotion! After the scorers checked with SSAA National scorer, Max Cody, it was announced that Keegan had: • 59.2 points – Best single card of the day; • 1.028" – Best group of the day (National Record); and, • 273.4 points – Highest total score of the day (National record). Rifl e spec's as shot by Keegan were Action: Hall; Barrel: Broughton 4C; Stock: Big Stick; Scope: Leupold 45x; and, Ammunition: R50 .22 target rim fi re. The irony is that Keegan's total score of the day bettered that of his grandfather's record! Congratulations to Keegan McGrann, who is a Junior member of SSAA NSW Sydney Branch.
