Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 21 Hunting Matters The deer hunting season is upon us! For Fallow, Red and Wapiti the season runs from 30 minutes before sunrise on 1 March to 30 minutes after sunset on 31 October. For Hog deer, the season runs from 30 minutes before sunrise on 1 April to 30 minutes after sunset on 30 April only. Hunting of game animals (deer) in NSW requires additional licencing issued by the NSW Department of Primary Industries. On private property, you're required to hold a minimum of a G-licence (General Game Hunting Licence) or R-Licence (Restricted Game Hunting Licence). The DPI Public Land Online Booking System is available only to those holding R-Licences. If you're interested in hunting in the Maragle South State Forrest, and you missed out on the fallow deer hunting ballot which covered the period from 1 March 2017 to 31 May 2017, don't stress, the normal online booking system will be back in action for hunts after the 1 June 2017. Please be mindful of the specifi c conditions of the forest you are hunting in, understand the conditions of the Written Permission ensuring that you have a colour printed and signed copy with you at all times. Wearing blaze orange is a mandatory condition of your written permission to hunt for the health and safety of yourself and consideration of others using the forest. This could be a hat, beanie, shirt or jacket, preferably something that can be easily seen from all directions. It is also a condition of hunting on public land that you carry a GPS or GPS enabled device (i.e. smartphone) capable of downloading the public land GPS mapping data from the DPI Online Licence Holder Services section of the website (Note: maps are only valid for a certain period so ensure that you have the latest version downloaded before heading out). Your GPS device does not need to be turned on all the time, however, it must be fully operational and you must be well versed on how to use it appropriately as you may be asked to demonstrate and identify your position to a Game Licencing Unit Compliance Offi cer. If you're hunting deer, remember that you need to abide by the following regulations: • Hunters must not use: o spotlights, artifi cial lights (including infrared devices) or electronic devices that enhance vision or hearing, o sights that project a beam or recorded sounds, o baits, lures, decoys or live animals (except deer callers and planted crops), o an aircraft, watercraft or motor vehicle. • Game animals cannot be hunted if they are fl eeing from fi re or smoke. • Deer may only be hunted during daylight hours (from half an hour before sunrise up to half an hour after sunset). • Dogs may only be used to locate, point or fl ush deer and must not chase the deer. Scent trailing hounds are not permitted to be used in NSW. • A person hunting alone may use one dog to hunt deer or a group may use up to two dogs to hunt deer.
