Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 19 silencers, there is something for every level of experience and preference. Speaking with experienced bowhunters and getting expert opinions will help give you the best information about what you may be interested in using. As with hunting with a fi rearm, ethical behaviour is of the highest importance. Unlike hunting with a fi rearm, the force generated by bowhunting is not consistently high enough to penetrate bone, therefore, the shot placement options are not as diverse. To ensure a safe and ethical dispatch, the best shot you can take is a broadside view, slightly facing away, with clear sight of where the vital organs sit. Arrows that have been correctly fi tted to the hunter's draw length, with a broadhead of not less than 25 millimetres in width and with a minimum of two sharpened cutting blades must be used. Ensure that the bow you use meets the minimum draw weights or poundage required for the quarry you want to take. (Refer to the NSW DPI Hunter Education Handbook for more information.) Practice makes perfect. The more comfortable you are with your bow, the better your results will be. Being confi dent of how far you can accurately and consistently shoot an arrow plays a large role in determining the distance an ethical shot can be made at: for many bowhunters the distance can be between 15 and 45 metres. Bowhunting is a close-range affair so it's important that you know your comfort zone and stay within that distance. Regardless of how good an opportunity presents itself, if you are not certain of a safe and ethical kill do not take the shot. All bowhunters should be encouraged to follow the four cornerstones of being an ethical bowhunter. 1. Learn and practise bowhunting techniques and know the limitations of your equipment and your personal skill level. 2. Learn and follow the regulations around hunting in NSW. 3. Only hunt on lands where you have permission. 4. Only target wild introduced game and do not target native wildlife – it is illegal.* *http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/hunting/safety/stay-on- target Visit us at these events HuntFest Saturday 10 – Sunday 11 June Narooma Sport & Leisure Centre Cnr Princes Highway & Bluewater Drive, Narooma Mudgee Small Farm Field Days Friday 14 – Saturday 15 July Australian Rural Education Centre, Mudgee 267 Ulan Rd, Mudgee AgQuip Tuesday 22 – Thursday 24 August 134 Black Jack Road, Gunnedah Safe Shooting courses • $90 per adult and $45 per junior (under 18) • Pre-bookings available R Licence accreditation • $35 per adult and $15 per junior (under 18) • No need to pre-book Pre-bookings • By phone on 0472 740 601 • By email to bookings@nsw.ssaa.org.au • Payment required at time of booking
