Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 11 The SSAA Lever Action Discipline began in the late 60's with the inaugural Lever Action National Championships being held in 1976. A competition that has now entered its 42nd year. As the name implies, lever action rifl es are used exclusively for this discipline. Using traditional open sights can prove diffi cult, however this discipline is a great way to improve your fi eld shooting skills using the lever action rifl e under range conditions. The competition is shot from the prone, sitting kneeling and standing positions, with or without a rest, at round and animal shaped targets. This discipline is hunting-oriented, with similar aspects taken from other SSAA disciplines such as Field Rifl e and Metallic Silhouette. It is a mixture of precision (5 shots in 5 minutes) and rapid fi re (5 shots in 10 seconds). The course of fi re is varied for every shoot, making for a challenging competition. The Lever Action Discipline as shot in State competition is split up into two separate categories, 'Classic Calibre' and 'Open Calibre'. These categories actually refer to the type of lever rifl e that may be used in these events. The Classic Calibre Lever Rifl e match essentially requires a centrefi re rifl e as issued by the factory having a two-piece wooden stock, tube feed magazine, an open hammer and traditional open-type iron sights (e.g. post and 'v'). Rotating bolt heads and box magazines are excluded. The rifl e can be chambered for any centrefi re ammunition where the cartridge was in factory production prior to the end of 1938. Jacketed or lead projectiles may be used, but spire points (spitzer) are not permitted for rapid fi re with tubular magazines unless specifi cally manufactured for this purpose. The rifl e must be capable of cycling rounds from the magazine to the chamber. The Open Lever Rifl e section is divided into separate Open Centrefi re and Open Rimfi re events at national level where competitors need two rifl es, however at state and club level it is permissible to use either as only one event is shot and is referred to as the 'Open' event. The description for an open lever rifl e is, any lever action rifl e with a wooden stock. Any calibre or handload or wildcat will be accepted, pointed projectiles will not be permitted in rapid-fi re events if safety is impaired (box mags ok). Peep, Vernier and small/big bore sights, with the exception of those using optical inserts and/or rubber eyepieces, will be permitted. The rimfi re category currently permits 22lr, 22mag and the 17HMR, however the 22lr is still competitive on the national scene probably due to the extensive research and development over the years on target quality ammunition.
