Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 13 Day 2 – It was up bright and early for breakfast before boarding the bus, driven by local Branch member Brian Weeding, for the journey to the Rankins Springs Range. Upon arrival, juniors were assembled and given an introduction to their fi rst activity, Big Game Rifl e. Before starting, James McDonald offi cially opened the day by fi ring his cannon. James explained a little about black powder before lighting the fuse that ignited the powder that sent the ball shooting about 200m downrange in a plume of smoke. A modifi ed Group Three competition was shot that had juniors using .223, 6.5 x 55 and .308 scoped rifl es to shoot a match that consisted of eight rounds unsupported, two shots at 100m in fi ve minutes, two shots at 50m in ten seconds then 2 x 2 shots at 25m in ten seconds per pair. Top score of the day was achieved by Alex, with 65 out of 80, in his fi rst attempt at Big Game Rifl e. For those who were game enough (pun intended), the venerable .458 Winchester Magnum was brought out and everyone was given the choice to have a crack at this big hitting rifl e. There were so many keen juniors it was astounding, some almost needing a catcher to help stay upright. The initial look of shock followed by a beaming smile showed that it was clearly worth having a go. Following lunch, the fi rst of two try shooting activities took place as everyone cycled through the .243 and .300 Win Mag bolt action rifl es, 30-30 lever action rifl e and 12 gauge lever action shotgun. This was followed by an opportunity to try lever action rifl es chambered in 32-20, 44-40 and 44 Magnum. The 32- 20 seemed so quiet, it was as though it was shooting felt projectiles instead of lead. You could be forgiven for thinking that it didn't go off in the presence of the other rifl es fi ring either side.
