St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre and SSAA NSW, recently bid farewell to our stalwart Maintenance Supervisor Theo Hystek. Theo was instrumental in designing and building the target carriers at the Centre and played a major role in building the facility, a role he began in 1996 with the late Roy Smith. My first interaction with Theo was being interviewed for a position as a casual Range Safety Officer, and I obviously got the job! Theo began as a Range Supervisor when the Centre opened in November 1999, but doubled as our Mr Fix It maintenance man. Over the years Theo delivered the rifle safety shooting course, pistol safe handling course, Try Shooting program and supervised rifle competitions as well as building the beloved Duelling Tree. Theo become a full-time Maintenance Supervisor in 2010 and kept himself busy maintaining the building and grounds, while still delivering Try Shooting sessions. Theo has been a devout volunteer for our Mobile Air Rifle Range from its' beginnings as a container which needed to be picked up by a truck and delivered to site before we graduated to the first caravan version of the mobile range in 2002. Theo has towed and volunteered for the Range countless times and has been instrumental in making the Range one of our great successes. Theo also designed and built the firing range for our Shot Expos held at Homebush, and his hard work is something I vividly recall given I had the arduous job of sitting and watching him do it! Theo has always been a well-liked member of staff, volunteering for any activity held at the Centre from charity shoots to open days. Known as Dutchy by some staff members for the last couple of years, Theo takes a wealth of knowledge with him and he will be sorely missed. We wish him all the best and hope he enjoys his well deserved and earned retirement with Cheryl as they travel Australia. Have a great time Theo! Thank you and farewell. Ali Newbery Cheerio Theo!
