Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 7 The same number said they had joined to support the lobbying activities of SSAA NSW (90%) and 88% cited access to shooting ranges as an important reason for being a member. The practical benefits of being a member included the public liability insurance that is provided (85% important) as well as the fact that membership supports their genuine reason to be a firearm owner (79%). On a personal level, 71% saw their membership of SSAA NSW as something they could enjoy with friends, while just over half (53%) felt it was an important part of their social life. Using their membership to improve their shooting skills was important to 69% as was training and education (65%). Participating in competitions organised through Branches and Affiliate Clubs had less broad appeal, but was still important to about one-third of members (35%). Shooting ranges Members reported they are generally well served by the access to shooting ranges provided by their local Branch. The vast majority (96%) said they currently have access to a shooting range, 2% have plans for access and only 2% have no plans for access. Most members are within reasonable driving distance of their nearest range. Almost half are within 20 km of the nearest range (43%) and 80% are within 50 km. Only 9% have to travel more than 70 km to reach the nearest range. KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH SSAA NSW Member communications SSAA NSW members stay in touch with information about shooting from a number of different sources, including communication from SSAA NSW, SSAA National and their local SSAA NSW Branch. Around half the members said the quality of information from SSAA National and SSAA NSW was good or very good, while more than 80% felt that SSAA NSW information was adequate or better. There were more mixed views about local Branch information, with 19% considering this to be not very good or bad and only 40% good or very good. When asked to consider the relative importance of the member communication from SSAA NSW, 78% said that the NSW Shooter Quarterly Review was important or very important to them.
