10 Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. Hi everyone, for those who don't know me I'm Dr Andrew Moriarty, Director of the DPI Game Licensing Unit. I am very pleased to be able to pen an article in the SSAA NSW's newsletter. Thank you in particular to Jai Rowell, your new CEO for this opportunity. I would like to take the opportunity in this initial article to introduce myself and the DPI Game Licensing Unit for those SSAA members who have not had much to do with us. My hunting career has come full circle recently, having started young with an old Fred Bear 21lb bow hunting rabbits, moving onto rifle shooting all species in my teens, 20s and 30s and now back with the bow and enjoying the challenge of traditional archery. My professional career started in 1998 with an honours degree on rabbits and what eats them, then a PhD on rusa deer, leading me to government positions in national parks, rural lands, catchment management, environment protection, and now in hunting. I have been the leader of the DPI Game Licensing Unit for nearly eight years now and I am immensely proud of my team and the great things we have been able to achieve for hunting and the community in NSW. In our initial business plan we rebuilt and remodelled ourselves as the administrator and regulator of hunting programs in NSW. Through this approach we have developed many strategic partnerships and rebuilt trust and confidence with the hunting industry, Government and community. Our next business plan is very much about building on this good work and continuing to regulate hunting well to protect the community as well as the reputation of licensed and responsible hunters. It also looks at ways in which hunting can increase its contribution to the community through economics, the increased harvest of problem wildlife species and through providing an outlet for people to spend time with friends and family in the outdoors, harvest clean organic meat and reconnect with the land and nature. We are already starting to see the synergies emerge from this new model with more hunters participating in licensed and responsible hunting pursuits driving positive regulatory outcomes. Correspondingly, when hunting is regulated well and hunters are safe, legal and responsible this opens up more opportunities for hunters to contribute to the NSW community. The success of this new approach will certainly require support from the hunting industry, in particular large and reputable clubs like SSAA NSW. I look forward to working with all your members to achieve great things for licensed responsible hunting and the community in the coming years.
