Then slowly increase the distance and difficulty when you feel ready. 6. PACKING YOUR GEAR It's probably been many months since you assembled your hunting pack. Now is a great time to pack your gear and check that it is all in working order. Attend to any repairs and replace any damaged items. Ensure your batteries are fresh or can still be recharged. Make sure you have the following items in your hunting pack: • A small first aid kit • GPS, Two-way radio or EPIRB • Hunting knives • A plastic whistle • A torch with spare batteries • Tissues or paper towel • High-energy foods • Bottled water • Fire-starting equipment • Blaze orange flagging tape • Rope • A map and compass • Rain gear and warm clothing • Any required prescription medicine • Sunglasses • Large garbage bags • Soap or sanitising lotion. 7. CHECK YOUR HUNTING EQUIPMENT Firearms and bows that have been stored for long periods should be inspected, repaired and cleaned thoroughly. Gun safes may hold moisture and you may find light traces of rust on the external surfaces. Check all moving parts for lubricant that has become gummed or sticky. Inspect the bore and barrel and ensure it is clean and free from fouling. Clean them as necessary. Check your archery equipment for any frayed or damaged strings and cracks in the riser or limbs. Inspect your arrows and make sure they are straight and true and have no defects. Ensure your broadheads are shaving sharp. Replace any equipment and familiarise yourself with it before you take to the field. 8. CHECK YOUR CLOTHING
