Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 6 Victorian Senator Bridget McKenzie stopped by the St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre this morning to find out more about our sport, and spent some time with one of our Safe Shooting Instructors to try her hand at handguns. Senator McKenzie, under the watchful instruction of Safe Shooting Instructor Mitch Newbery was put through a Try Shooting program where she was able to use a .22 Ruger, 9mm Glock and a Smith and Wesson .357. Mr Newbery informs us that Senator McKenzie didn't require a lot in the way of instruction. "She was a natural. I think her favourite was definitely the Smith and Wesson .357." Although experienced with long arms this was the Senators first time using handguns, and she proved to be an excellent shot! Having developed an interest in the shooting at a young age, Senator McKenzie says she enjoys many aspects of the sport. "I like getting to know people, developing practical skills in hunting, being outdoors and the camaraderie that exists between shooters. I also enjoy competing against myself and constantly improving my skills." SSAA NSW Executive Director Diana Melham said that the morning spent on the Range was a great opportunity to speak with a member of the Federal Government who, as a licensed firearm owner, has an interest in firearms and tell her more about SSAA NSW and the sport in New South Wales. "We were really pleased that Senator McKenzie showed such an interest in coming out to St Marys Indoor Shooting Centre and showing off her skills." "She was a REALLY good shot!" "It's important for SSAA NSW to build our relationship with all levels of Government and show them what a fantastic sport shooting is." Senator McKenzie echoes this sentiment. "Any sport that helps support a healthy mind, body and community has an important role to play in our society. For policy makers it's about getting the balance right between safety and freedom."
