Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 10 Blue Heeler Classic Fly Benchrest returns to Big Springs Competition returned to the Big Springs range in Wagga Wagga with the 2014 SSAA NSW Wagga Blue Heeler Classic held there on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August 2014. Hosted by SSAA NSW Wagga Wagga Branch, the 300 and 500 metre fl y shoot took place at the reopened Big Springs range on Wrigleys Road after the completion of installations and upgrades to the facility. The event was able to be take place thanks to the support of the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service, a signifi cant contribution from SSAA NSW and the hard work put in by the members and volunteers of the Wagga Branch. The weekend saw more than 50 competitors from all over NSW and Victoria converge on Wagga to compete. There was a maximum score of 300.25 possible in each class with ideal conditions and light switching winds setting up a perfect weekend for competition. In the 300 metre custom and factory class event on Saturday, fi rst place in custom class was taken by Michael Bell with 292.05 ahead of Grant Groves (291.14) and Rod Davies (290.11) in second and third respectively. Factory class was won by Brandon Guglemino with 269.02 and the top Junior for the day was Kiera Deehan (274.04). The 500 metre Light Gun and Heavy Gun Fly events on Sunday were nationally registered meaning shooters were also competing for Australian Shooter of The Year points. Victorian Tyson Trotter set a new range record of 261.04 on his way to winning the Light Gun. Heavy Gun was won by Dave Groves with 256.02 but he was pushed all the way by Paul Deehan from Corryong who set a new Heavy Gun best target record of 59.03 and eventually fi nished in third place. Long range precision shooting events, in particular the Fly shoot, are growing rapidly and it attracts some of the best benchrest shooters in the country, yet it is friendly enough for anyone with an interest to have a go. Entries vary from basic off-the-shelf factory rifl e through to full custom benchrest rifl es, with new shooters and juniors also made welcome.
