Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 7 Minors – Frequently Asked Questions How old do I have to be to shoot in NSW? You must be a minimum of 12 years of age to shoot in NSW. You can do this lawfully by attending a Try Shooting session under the direct supervision of an accredited instructor where you will learn the basics of fi rearm handling and safety. You and your legal guardian will complete a P650 form before you're able to try out this safe, fun and all-inclusive sport of shooting. If you decide you like it and want to continue with the sport you may wish to apply for a NSW Minor's Permit. Of note, Try Shooting events are not a prerequisite to applying for or obtaining your Minor's Permit. How old must I be to get a NSW Minor's Permit? You will need to be between 12 and 18 years of age and have the consent of your parent or court appointed legal guardian. How do I obtain a NSW Minor's Permit? Visit the NSW Firearms Registry's website http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/services/fi rearms/ permits/fi rearms_permits/minors, complete and print the interactive forms "Application for a Minor's Firearm Permit" and "Minor's Firearm Permit Legitimate Reason Form". You will need to complete an approved safety training course. SSAA NSW Branches run these frequently. It is the same as the adult Safe Shooting Course but minors are only required to complete a portion of the written exam.
