16 Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. Inaugural Big Game Rifle Event The Inaugural Big Game Rifle event at Silverdale Range, held on the 8 July, was an unqualified success. A humble start for this first event, with seven competitors from the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Southern Highlands, Illawarra and Sydney all lining up on a cool Silverdale morning to try out the Group One course of fire. The competitors were able to get off to a prompt start due to the efficient handiwork of Andy Mallen, SSAA Silverdale Range Manager, who had sourced and neatly set-up the Discipline approved 'Buffalo' targets ready for everyone's arrival, allowing smooth transition through introductions, the safety briefing and an explanation of the course of fire, before getting right into the competition. The competition was all done and dusted by 10.45am, meaning there is still plenty of opportunities for more competitors to attend and enjoy the match. Despite everyone being a little out of practice with their Group One gear, results on the day were creditable, as detailed below: Ben 151/200 Andy 139/200 Lindsay 138/200 Laif 128/200 Scott 106.1/200 Pawell 102.1/200 Justin 69/200 Everyone who attended was enthusiastic about the future events, and after some discussion between the NSW Discipline Chairman Ben Doherty and Silverdale Range Manager Andy Mallen, these BGR competitions will continue on the second Saturday of each month. In view of the huge interest that the BGR Match has generated, and the current range restrictions prevalent across most of NSW in relation to BGR calibres, the organisers are going to welcome those with sub .330 calibre rifles to participate in these matches also, with a view to encouraging members to upgrade to a Group One calibre when they are more comfortable and proficient with the course of fire. So, if you are aware of anyone who would like to participate with a 'Light Nitro' rifle (.243 and above), please encourage them to come along and participate. The BGR NSW State Titles is rapidly approaching, to be held on Sunday 17 September at Windamere Regional Shooting Complex, Mudgee. Whilst this event will be run sub 8mm due to the calibre restrictions currently in force, it looks to be another great day of shooting.
