8 Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. 2019 SSAA NSW Junior Camp Day 1 – Juniors were first inducted into the camp, with a few ice breakers, before being allocated to a team. The camp program was designed so that the conduct of all the events enabled recognition of individual achievements whilst also accumulating points towards the team's score. After lunch we were straight into the competition with the 200m Rimfire Fly Shoot. When originally presented with the targets to be shot there was a lot of apprehension as to whether it would even be possible to hit the fly target. The conditions were favourable with light variable winds testing the skills of the juniors. Due to time constraints we ran a slightly reduced format match of 4 targets per competitor, still with the regulation 5 shots per target and 3 sighting shots. Even with the initial apprehension, it wasn't long before we saw the first fly hit. At the end of the day there was a total of 19 fly's shot with the most being 4 by a single competitor. The scores were very close however the top score for the match was William with 154.01 followed closely behind by Piper with 153.03 and Jirrah with 141. The best group was also shot by William at under three inches. The SSAA NSW Junior Camp has grown from its initial concept 4 years ago to a very successful franchise with the development of a winning formula that ensures its continued success. These camps are a collective effort in coordination and logistics with much of the behind the scenes work providing the foundations for such a well-run event. This year's camp would not have been possible without the generosity of the SSAA NSW Batemans Bay Branch and volunteers who were kind enough to invite us back again. This was no real surprise as the Batemans Bay Branch has a long history in junior development including offering a sports for schools program. Having access to a 500m range that caters to a variety of disciplines with facilities at the range, such as a clubhouse large enough for all involved to roll out a swag or stretcher, a fully functioning kitchen and showers, made this an ideal location for hosting a junior camp. The camp ran from Saturday 13 April to Tuesday 16 April with a full schedule of events that utilised the expertise and availability of the local Branch volunteers.
