A Tilterweira Tale... My husband David has been a shooter for many years and has often spoken to me about joining him in his activities of hunting and target shooting, so I decided that my turning 60 would make this a good year to try something new. As I had only just completed the process of obtaining my shooters licence the week before our holiday I was now able to be included as a hunter on the trip we had planned to Tilterweira Station - the SSAA NSW property an hour south of Wanaaring in far west NSW. The trip was pretty exciting as we had rain from Bourke to Wanaaring and I spent a very quiet few hours as David managed the 4WD through the very slippery conditions. We were introduced to the "Conservation Block" of 13,000 acres which SSAA NSW is attempting to clear of all feral species. Feral goats were on our agenda and it didn't take long to start spotting them. On the third day we came upon a small group and as we were down wind of them they were unaware of our presence. As a new hunter I was very keen to ensure that I killed the animal cleanly and having borrowed my son's Sako A7 .30-06 this was great assistance in ensuring this humane outcome. The raptor bullets David had loaded guaranteed that with a clear heart lung shot the billy goat dropped to the ground and never moved. He was a great looking animal and the 31" horns will be mounted as evidence of my first hunt. Every person who is a meat eater should understand the respect that needs to be paid to the animals that feed us and I was grateful to my tutors in David and Frank and the rigorous process of obtaining my licence that enabled me to do something so completely different in my life. Tilterweira shouldn't be advertised really as we'd like to keep it to ourselves and especially for the fantastic night sky......it was truly beautiful. Danae Jenkins Volunteers WANTED! SSAA NSW is currently seeking volunteers for our Mobile Air Rifle Range We finally made it to the station, with guidance from the very helpful local policeman Brian, and unpacked our gear into the shearers' quarters where to our surprise we found we were the only visitors booked in for the week. The station caretaker Frank was one of the most knowledgeable bush men (or old "bush pig" as he referred to himself! ) and just so helpful in steering us in the right direction. 4 SSAA NSW operates a Mobile Air Rifle Range to promote the shooting sports and provide an opportunity for newcomers to try the sport in a relaxed atmosphere. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or to find out more information, please contact info@stmarys.ssaa.org.au Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (NSW) Inc. RESULTS
